Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Protection

Damien slowly walked back to the center of the room. He ran a hand through his dark hair, his broad chest heaving as the adrenaline slowly faded. He looked down at Ellie.
The 26-year-old woman was sitting on the floor in her pink retro uniform, gently rocking the twin babies, her face radiating a profound, maternal warmth.
"You didn't learn that rhythm trick waiting tables," Damien said quietly, his intense, piercing gaze softening as he looked at her. "And you identified a synthetic neuro-stimulant in three seconds. Who are you, really?"
Ellie looked down, a sad smile touching her lips. "I was a senior pediatric trauma therapist in New York," she confessed softly. "I testified against an abusive cartel boss to save a patient. They put a bounty on my head. I had to run, change my name, and hide in a diner."
Damien stared at her. This brilliant, incredibly brave woman was living in constant fear, scrubbing tables to survive, yet she hadn't hesitated for a single second to risk her own life and blow her cover to save his children.
Damien dropped to one knee, looking directly into her eyes.
"The bounty on your head is gone as of tonight," Damien vowed, his voice carrying the absolute, unbreakable weight of a mafia kingpin's promise. "You are no longer a waitress, Ellie. You are the private guardian of my sons. You will live in my estate, you will have whatever you want, and the entire Moretti syndicate will protect your life until my last breath."

Ellie let out a shaky, tearful breath, realizing her nightmare of running was finally over. She looked down at the beautiful, sleeping babies in her arms, finally safe.
If you were Ellie, would you have risked blowing your deep cover to save the mafia boss's babies, or would you have stayed hidden in the crowd to protect yourself?
