Chapter 2 - The Mafia Boss

The cinematic realism of the heavy, suffocating tension gripped the sunny courtyard.

Dominic didn't wait for the trembling director to answer. He turned his broad shoulders and walked deliberately across the loud crunching gravel and onto the soft green grass. He completely ignored the wealthy, elite couples staring at him in sheer, unfiltered terror as the most dangerous man in the city marched through their charity event.

He was heading straight for Lily.

Lily was six years old, sitting entirely alone in the deep shade of an old oak tree. She was sitting in a heavy black wheelchair, wearing a worn, faded floral dress, plain white socks, and scuffed pink shoes. Her wavy light brown hair was tied back with a simple pink ribbon. She was clutching a worn, brown stuffed bear tightly against her chest, isolating herself from the loud, chaotic world that had entirely rejected her.

To understand the absolute, unhinged terror radiating from the orphanage staff, one had to look at the massive, violent tragedy that had occurred two years ago.

Lily’s father, Marcus, had been Dominic’s most trusted, fiercely loyal underboss. During a massive, coordinated ambush by a rival cartel, Marcus had thrown himself in front of Dominic, taking the bullets meant for his boss. The rival cartel had then firebombed Marcus’s house. Lily’s mother was killed instantly. Lily had miraculously survived, but the spinal cord injury left her permanently in a wheelchair, and the trauma had completely stolen her voice.

Dominic had spent two agonizing years destroying the rival cartel. He had finally found out where the state had hidden Marcus’s daughter.
