Chapter 8 - The Princess Goes Home

Lily sat in her black wheelchair, clutching her worn stuffed bear tightly against her chest. She had watched the screaming, the police, and the arrests with wide, shocked eyes. But she didn't cry.

Dominic crouched down on one knee again, completely ignoring the dirt on his expensive suit. He looked at the little girl, his dark eyes filled with profound, overwhelming emotion.

"You never have to be scared of monsters again, Lily," Dominic whispered fiercely, gently resting his tattooed hand on the armrest of her wheelchair. "Because I am the biggest monster in this city. And I am going to make sure no one ever hurts you again. Are you ready to go home?"

Lily looked at the massive, terrifying man. She saw the absolute, unbroken truth in his eyes. He wasn't going to pity her. He was going to protect her.

Very slowly, Lily nodded her head.

Dominic smiled a beautiful, genuine smile. He stood up, walked behind her wheelchair, and gently began to push her across the sunny courtyard.

They didn't look back at the grand stone building or the terrified orphanage staff. They walked straight out the heavy iron gates toward Dominic’s waiting, heavily armored private car.

For the first time in two years, Lily felt a profound, heavy sense of absolute safety. She wasn't an unwanted, disabled orphan anymore. She was the fiercely protected, undisputed princess of a massive empire, guarded by a man who would gladly burn the world to the ground to keep her safe.
