Chapter 1 - The Unfinished Statue

The heavy, soundproof glass doors of the luxurious American winter garden suddenly flew open.
Caleb Marino sat rigidly in the center of the room. The late-thirties mafia boss was a terrifying, hardened man, wearing an unbuttoned black dress shirt and a tailored black suit jacket that exposed the dark syndicate tattoo on his neck. He sat in a heavy black metal wheelchair, a thick wool blanket completely covering his paralyzed legs.
He had spent the last two years in this chair, utterly broken, ruling his empire with absolute, bitter cruelty. No one was allowed in his winter garden.
But dancing right past his elite, heavily armed guards was an eight-year-old girl.
Lily wore a sparkling pink dress underneath a pink tweed jacket, her glittery sneakers squeaking against the polished marble floor. She was holding a small purple portable speaker, blasting upbeat pop music. Following closely behind her was her older brother, Jason, a teenager in a denim jacket who looked absolutely, paralyzingly terrified of the men in the black suits.
Caleb glared at the little intruder, the cinematic realism of his deep, dark anger fully evident. His two guards tensed in the background, their hands drifting toward their concealed weapons, waiting for the boss to order the children removed.
But Lily completely ignored the lethal tension. She stopped right in front of Caleb’s wheelchair, raising her small purple speaker high into the air. She wasn't afraid. She was completely fearless.

"Mister," Lily announced cheerfully, her voice cutting through the heavy silence. "Your face looks like an unfinished statue."
👉 Caleb expected to terrify the child, but her next playful insult would completely disarm the most dangerous man in the city.
