Chapter 2 - The Spark of Life

Caleb’s harsh, terrifying expression twitched.
For two years, grown men had trembled in his presence. Politicians had practically begged on their knees in front of this very wheelchair. No one had ever dared to insult him, let alone a tiny girl in glittery sneakers.
To the absolute shock of his tense bodyguards, Caleb didn't yell. A rare, involuntary smirk touched the corner of his mouth as he looked down at the brave little girl.
"Statues don't have eyebrows," Caleb replied, his voice dry, controlled, but remarkably calm.
Lily narrowed her huge brown eyes playfully. She didn't back down. She pointed a tiny finger directly at the mafia boss while spinning around gracefully on the polished marble.
"Angry statues do," Lily teased.
Jason, the older brother, physically staggered backward, his face turning pale with sheer, unadulterated panic. "Lily, stop!" he hissed desperately, grabbing her arm. "We have to go! Mom said not to bother him!"
But before Lily could respond to her brother, something physically impossible happened.
Beneath the heavy wool blanket covering Caleb's legs, his right foot violently shifted against the leather of his black shoe. It wasn't a phantom twitch. It was a solid, undeniable, muscular movement.
Caleb’s breath completely caught in his throat. The smirk vanished from his face, violently replaced by a look of sheer, breathless shock. He hadn't felt a single sensation below his waist in twenty-four months.
