Chapter 1 - THE FIRST PUNCH

Walter’s fist hit Emily before anyone finished dinner.

The blow drove into the curve of her eight-month pregnant belly and threw her backward into the kitchen counter. A plate shattered beside her feet. The fluorescent light above the stove buzzed as if the room itself had failed to understand what had just happened.

Emily’s breath vanished.

Pain spread low across her abdomen.

Both hands covered the baby instinctively.

Across the wooden table, Corey stood frozen.

Her husband.

The man who had promised in front of witnesses to protect her.

The man now staring at the floor while his father raised another fist.

Lorraine pointed at Emily with furious eyes.

“Hit her again!”

Walter stepped forward.

Emily backed away until the edge of the counter pressed into her spine.

“Corey,” she whispered.

He moved half a step.

Then stopped.

His eyes lowered.

That was the moment something inside Emily changed.

Not because Walter wanted to hurt her.

Not because Lorraine encouraged him.

Because Corey chose stillness.

Walter drew back his fist again.

Emily’s trembling hand reached behind her.

Her fingers found the cold handle of the cast-iron skillet sitting on the stove.

Heavy.

Solid.

Real.

She pulled it free.

Tears ran down her face.

Her other arm remained wrapped around her stomach.

“You’re not touching my baby again.”

Walter lunged.

Emily swung.

The skillet smashed across the side of his face with a sound that silenced everyone.

Walter crashed backward into the dining table. Dishes, glasses, and food exploded across the kitchen. Lorraine screamed.

Corey stared at Emily as if he had never seen her before.

Walter spat blood onto the floor and struggled to rise.

Emily stood between him and her unborn child, both hands shaking, the skillet raised again.

Walter reached inside his jacket.

“You’ll regret that.”

Emily did not step back.

Lorraine grabbed Corey’s arm.

Then Walter froze.

His face drained of color.

He was staring at something behind Emily.

She turned her head slowly.

The back kitchen door stood open.

A police officer was standing there.

Beside him was Dr. Sarah Collins, Emily’s obstetrician.

And in Dr. Collins’s hand was a sealed evidence bag containing a hidden camera no one in the room knew existed.
