Chapter 3 - THE CAMERA IN THE LIGHT FIXTURE
Dr. Sarah Collins had become suspicious during Emily’s last prenatal appointment.
Emily arrived with bruising near one wrist.
She said she caught it on a cabinet.
Corey answered most questions.
He insisted she was stressed.
When Dr. Collins asked Emily privately whether she felt safe, Emily hesitated.
Then said yes.
The answer did not match her eyes.
Dr. Collins documented the pause.
Two days later, Emily called the clinic from a grocery store bathroom.
She asked whether her in-laws could obtain medical authority without her consent.
Dr. Collins said no.
Emily whispered, “They’re trying.”
The clinic’s social worker arranged a discreet safety plan.
Emily agreed to wear a small emergency pendant hidden under her dress.
The device activated audio and transmitted location.
But Emily did more.
At a previous visit to Lorraine’s kitchen, she noticed an old smart-home camera embedded in the fluorescent fixture. Walter believed it had stopped working after a software update.
Emily had configured the system years earlier.
The camera still connected to an unused cloud account registered in Corey’s name.
Before dinner, she logged in remotely and reactivated recording.
She did not know Walter would hit her.
She knew they wanted papers signed.
The camera captured the entire dinner.
The folder.
The threats.
Corey’s silence.
Lorraine saying, “If she refuses, she leaves with nothing.”
Walter replying, “She won’t leave standing.”
Then the punch.
Emily activated the emergency pendant as she reached for the skillet.
Police and Dr. Collins were already on the way.
