Chapter 2 - THE DINNER THEY PLANNED
The family dinner had never been about reconciliation.
That was the first truth the camera revealed.
Three weeks earlier, Lorraine called Emily and asked her to come to the old family house.
“Corey is falling apart,” she said. “He needs his wife.”
Emily almost laughed.
Corey had been sleeping at his parents’ home for ten days after refusing to attend a prenatal appointment.
When Emily confronted him, he said his father was under pressure and needed support.
When she asked why Walter’s pressure mattered more than the baby, Corey called her dramatic.
Then Lorraine began calling every morning.
Family should solve problems privately.
A wife should not isolate a son from his parents.
Pregnancy made women irrational.
Emily refused twice.
On the third call, Lorraine said Walter wanted to apologize.
Emily agreed only because Corey promised he would stay beside her.
He did not.
Before dinner, he spent forty minutes alone with his father in the garage.
When he returned, his face looked empty.
The food had already been prepared.
Roast chicken.
Mashed potatoes.
Green beans.
The cast-iron skillet remained on the stove after Lorraine used it for cornbread.
Walter poured drinks.
Lorraine asked about Emily’s birth plan.
The questions sounded polite.
Then they changed.
Who controlled the hospital room?
Who held medical power if Emily became unconscious?
Who would receive custody if something went wrong?
Emily stopped eating.
“What kind of dinner is this?”
Walter leaned back.
“A practical one.”
Corey said nothing.
Lorraine placed a folder beside Emily’s plate.
Inside was a temporary medical authorization giving Walter and Lorraine access to the baby’s records and emergency decision-making authority.
Emily pushed it away.
“No.”
Walter’s jaw tightened.
“You think you can cut this family out?”
“It’s my medical care.”
“It’s our grandchild.”
“No. It is my child.”
That was when Walter stood.
The argument escalated.
Lorraine accused Emily of controlling Corey.
Walter called her ungrateful.
Corey begged everyone to calm down without defending anyone.
Then Emily said she would leave.
Walter blocked the kitchen door.
The first punch came less than thirty seconds later.
