Emily went into labor three weeks early.
Dr. Collins led the team.
No family member entered without Emily’s approval.
Corey requested access.
Denied.
Lorraine sent flowers.
Rejected.
Walter remained in custody.
The baby girl was born after eleven hours.
Healthy.
Small.
Loud.
Emily named her Grace.
Not because the family deserved grace.
Because Grace belonged to no debt.
No trust.
No empire.
No expectation.
When the nurse asked for emergency contacts, Emily listed Dr. Collins’s social worker and a close friend from college.
