Chapter 4 - THE BABY’S TRUST
The medical authorization was only one page.
The rest of the folder concerned money.
Corey’s grandfather had established a trust twenty-eight years earlier. The first great-grandchild born into the direct line would inherit controlling shares in Caldwell Agricultural Holdings.
The company owned land, processing plants, and water rights worth more than one hundred million dollars.
Walter had managed those assets for years.
He believed they would remain under his control.
The trust said otherwise.
Upon the child’s birth, voting authority transferred to the child’s legal parents until age twenty-five.
Corey and Emily.
Equal control.
Unless one parent became medically incapacitated.
Then the other parent held full authority.
If both became unavailable, Walter became emergency trustee.
Emily stared at the document from her hospital bed.
The punch had not been about anger.
It had been about incapacity.
Dr. Collins confirmed something else.
Walter’s first blow was aimed low and deliberately.
Not at Emily’s face.
Not at her shoulder.
At the pregnancy.
He wanted a medical emergency.
If the baby survived and Emily became unconscious, Corey would control the shares.
Corey had already signed a private proxy transferring his authority to Walter.
