Walter appealed repeatedly.
He claimed Emily’s self-defense was excessive.
Claimed the camera violated privacy.
Claimed the trust investigation prejudiced the jury.
Every appeal failed.
His final filing called him a family patriarch punished for protecting legacy.
Grace read the phrase at twenty-one.
She laughed without humor.
“Legacy.”
Emily looked at her.
“What does it mean to you?”
Grace thought.
“Something people use when they want the future to obey the past.”
Emily smiled.
“That’s very good.”
“I had material.”
Grace chose not to use the Caldwell name professionally.
Not from shame.
From freedom.
She became Grace Brooks, using Emily’s family name.
The legal change required one hearing.
