Chapter 5 - COREY’S PROMISE
Corey asked to see Emily at the hospital.
She refused.
Then he sent a written statement through Detective Ethan Cole.
I DIDN’T KNOW HE WOULD HIT YOU.
Emily read the sentence.
Then read it again.
Not:
I should have stopped him.
Not:
I betrayed you.
Only:
I did not know.
The statement continued.
Walter said the dinner would pressure Emily into signing.
Corey agreed.
Lorraine said fear might make her reasonable.
Corey agreed.
Walter told him to stay out of the way if tempers rose.
Corey agreed.
He knew about the trust.
He knew about the proxy.
He knew the family planned to use pregnancy and medical stress to take control.
He claimed he did not know about violence.
Emily asked Detective Cole, “Does that make him innocent?”
“No.”
“Does it make him less guilty?”
“That depends on the charge.”
She hated the legal answer.
She also needed it.
Corey’s weakness was not passive.
He brought her into the house.
He watched the folder appear.
He saw Walter block the door.
He moved forward when the second punch began.
Then stopped.
The camera recorded all of it.
The prosecution would later call that hesitation evidence.
