Chapter 2 - The Cold Lockdown

The cinematic tension in the sterile hospital room was absolutely paralyzing.
Dante didn't yell. He didn't punch the wall. But all the color completely drained from his handsome, hardened face. The untouchable king of the Chicago underworld stared at me, his dark eyes widening in sheer, profound horror.
He hadn't been breathing because the message wasn't just a threat. It was the exposure of his most guarded, lethal secret.
"A diamond ring?" I whispered, my head throbbing beneath the bandages. "Dante, what are they talking about? I'm just your secretary."
Dante’s jaw clenched so tightly the muscles ticked beneath his stubble. He didn't answer me. The broken, terrified man vanished in a microsecond, violently replaced by the cold, calculating executioner. He stood up to his full, towering height and pulled his encrypted phone from his overcoat.
"Marcus," Dante commanded, his voice dropping into a dark, demonic register that sucked all the oxygen out of the room. "Bring the armored convoy to the hospital loading dock. We are moving her to my private estate. Now."
"Dante, the doctors said I shouldn't be moved!" I panicked, clutching the bedsheets.
"The hospital isn't safe," Dante replied coldly, completely ignoring medical protocol. "They know you're my only weakness, Harper. Which means they are going to try to finish the job."
Before the nurses could even object, Dante's elite, heavily armed security detail swarmed the corridor. Dante didn't wait for a wheelchair. He gently, carefully scooped my broken body into his massive arms, his intense, protective warmth completely shielding me as he carried me out of the building.
We arrived at his sprawling, fortress-like estate on the edge of the city. He placed me in the massive master suite.
