Chapter 1 - The Empty Chair

The bright American suburban dining room was supposed to be a picture-perfect setting for a beautiful family Christmas. A massive, perfectly decorated Christmas tree glowed in the corner, illuminating the crisp white cabinetry and the extravagant holiday feast laid out on the long dining table.
But the festive atmosphere was completely, suffocatingly toxic.
Rachel, a thirty-something woman wearing a beautiful blue midi dress and a white knit cardigan, stood frozen near the edge of the dining table. She was holding a stack of carefully wrapped Christmas presents in one hand, while her other hand tightly gripped the tiny, trembling fingers of her seven-year-old daughter, Lily.
Lily wore a sweet maroon corduroy pinafore dress over a crisp white shirt. Her big blue eyes were welling with heavy, heartbroken tears.
Sitting at the head of the table was Diane.
Diane was a woman in her sixties wearing a dark green knit sweater. Her face was twisted into a mask of pure, unapologetic favoritism. She aggressively pointed a wrinkled finger directly at Rachel and the crying little girl.
"Lily can eat after everyone else," Diane stated coldly, her voice echoing off the dining room walls. "There isn't enough room right now."

Rachel’s heart completely stopped. She looked at the massive dining table. There were three empty chairs. There was more than enough room for her daughter. Diane wasn't banishing Lily because of space; she was banishing her to assert her cruel, twisted dominance.
👉 Rachel was too stunned to speak, completely unaware of the horrifying justification her mother was about to use.
