Chapter 4 - The Silent Exit

"We are leaving," Rachel stated firmly, her voice dropping into a cold, freezing register that instantly paralyzed the dining room.
Connor finally looked up from his phone, his mouth hanging open. The grandfather sitting in the burgundy vest suddenly froze, his jaw dropping in absolute shock. He dropped his fork onto his china plate with a loud clatter.
"What are you talking about?" the grandfather stammered, his eyes darting nervously between his wife and his daughter. "Rachel, it's Christmas."
"I'm taking my daughter somewhere she's welcome," Rachel replied, her voice completely steady and entirely devoid of human warmth.
Diane scoffed loudly in the background, crossing her arms over her green knit sweater. The older woman rolled her eyes in sheer, toxic entitlement, fully believing Rachel was just throwing a pathetic, dramatic temper tantrum.
"You're leaving over one plate?" Diane mocked cruelly. "You are so unbelievably dramatic, Rachel. Go ahead and walk out. But don't expect an invitation to New Year's dinner. I won't tolerate this disrespect in my house."
Rachel stopped walking.
She turned around and stared dead at her arrogant, entitled mother. A cold, heavy realization washed over Rachel’s face as the word my house echoed in the air.
Rachel didn't argue with her. She didn't correct the massive, delusional lie Diane was telling herself in front of the family.

She simply turned her back on her toxic parents, opened the heavy mahogany front door, and walked out into the freezing winter night with her child.
👉 Diane smirked as the door closed, completely unaware that Rachel was taking a massive financial secret with her.
