Chapter 6 - The Midnight Cancellation

The digital clock on Rachel’s dashboard read midnight by the time they reached their luxury downtown apartment.

Rachel tucked Lily into her warm, comfortable bed, kissing her forehead and promising her that they would have their own beautiful Christmas morning tomorrow.

Once Lily was asleep, Rachel walked out to her dark kitchen island. She opened her laptop.

The glow of the screen illuminated her calm, calculating face. She logged into her highly secured, private wealth management portal. She clicked on the automated transfers tab. There, sitting at the top of the list, was the massive monthly payment that funded her parents' extravagant suburban lifestyle.

For five years, she had sacrificed her own savings to ensure her mother had a pristine white kitchen and a massive dining room to host holidays. And her mother had used that very same dining room to humiliate Rachel’s child.

With slow, steady, and incredibly deliberate taps on her trackpad, Rachel canceled the automatic monthly mortgage payment.

She didn't stop there. She formally logged into the utility portals and scheduled the immediate disconnection of the electricity, the water, and the high-speed internet under her name.

The invisible financial safety net was completely, permanently severed.
