Chapter 9 - The Crushing Reality

"I will call your brother!" Diane screamed, her voice cracking in pure, unadulterated terror. "He will pay the mortgage! He won't let you throw us out on the street!"

Rachel smiled. It was a cold, terrifying, apex-predator smile.

"Call him," Rachel challenged softly. "Ask your golden son for four thousand dollars a month. See how much he actually cares about you when you aren't providing free babysitting and massive holiday dinners."

Rachel hung up the phone, permanently severing the toxic monsters from her life.

Back in the freezing suburban house, Diane frantically dialed her son. When she explained the situation, begging for financial rescue, her precious son immediately made excuses. He claimed they were too tight on cash, that Connor needed private tutoring, and then he coldly hung up on her.

Diane dropped her phone onto the dark kitchen floor, sobbing uncontrollably as the reality of her absolute, irreversible bankruptcy crushed her soul.

By Friday morning, the heavy front doors were violently thrown open by county sheriffs.

The officers didn't care about Diane's expensive sweaters. They marched through the pristine white trim, systematically forcing the weeping, screaming older couple out of the house.
