Chapter 2 - The Spoiled Golden Child

The cinematic realism of the absolute disrespect hung heavy over the holiday feast.
Rachel looked past her mother's pointing finger and saw exactly who was taking up the extra space. Sitting right next to Diane was Rachel’s twelve-year-old nephew, Connor.
Connor wore a thick navy cardigan, slouching lazily in his chair. He had aggressively spread his elbows across two placemats, completely monopolizing the space. Sitting directly in front of the twelve-year-old boy was an overflowing, massive plate stacked high with prime rib, mashed potatoes, and three different types of pie.
He hadn't even started eating. He was too busy playing a loud video game on his phone.
"Move his jacket, Mom," Rachel said, her voice shaking with restrained disbelief. "Lily is hungry. She has been waiting all day for Christmas dinner."
Diane slammed her hand down on the dining table, making the crystal wine glasses rattle violently.
"Connor's been upset!" Diane snapped from off-screen, fiercely defending the spoiled nephew. "He didn't get the virtual reality headset he wanted this morning. He needs his space to decompress. Your child can sit on the kitchen floor or wait until the men are finished eating."
Rachel’s father, sitting across the table in a burgundy vest, physically winced. The sixty-year-old grandfather looked down at his plate, absolutely terrified of his domineering wife, choosing to remain completely silent while his own granddaughter was treated like a stray dog.
