Chapter 7 - The Foreclosure Notice

Three weeks passed. Diane never called to apologize. She was stubbornly waiting for Rachel to come crawling back, begging for forgiveness for "ruining" Christmas dinner.

But on a freezing Tuesday morning, the toxic illusion violently shattered.

Diane was sitting in her white kitchen, sipping expensive coffee in her green knit sweater. The grandfather walked through the front door after checking the mailbox, his face the color of wet ash.

He was holding a thick, heavy envelope plastered with bright red, certified legal stamps.

"Diane," the grandfather choked out, his voice shaking wildly as he dropped the envelope onto the kitchen island. "The bank just sent a notice of default. The mortgage hasn't been paid this month."

Diane scoffed, rolling her eyes in pure annoyance. "It's obviously a clerical error, Richard. Call the bank and yell at them. I am not dealing with this today, I have a luncheon."

"It's not an error," the grandfather panicked, ripping the paper open. "The trust account is completely empty. The automatic payments were permanently canceled on December 25th."

All the color violently drained from Diane’s face.

Before she could process the horrifying reality of the letter, the lights above the kitchen island flickered and completely died. The hum of the refrigerator stopped. The Wi-Fi router on the counter went entirely dark.

"What is happening?!" Diane shrieked, clutching her coffee mug as the house plunged into freezing silence.

👉 Diane grabbed her cell phone with trembling hands, entirely unaware that the phone call would seal her absolute doom.
