Chapter 4 - The Fake Death

"He's coming," I whispered frantically, hearing Vincent's arrogant voice echoing in the hallway.
Dominic’s eyes widened. If Vincent walked in and saw him breathing, my sister was dead, and Dominic's loyal guards would be slaughtered in a coup.
"Give me your arm," I commanded, moving with blinding speed.
I pulled a beta-blocker from my bag and injected a safe but heavy dose directly into Dominic’s IV line. "This is going to drop your heart rate and your body temperature drastically. You are going to feel incredibly cold, and your pulse will be almost undetectable. Close your eyes. Do not move a single muscle."
Dominic nodded once, lying completely flat against the dark pillows. He slowed his breathing until he looked like a flawless, pale corpse.
The heavy double doors swung open.
Vincent Rossi walked in, wearing a sharp grey suit, accompanied by Dominic’s stunning, blonde fiancée, Chloe.
I immediately backed away from the bed, forcing my hands to shake, playing the role of the terrified, compliant assassin perfectly.
"Is it done?" Vincent demanded, stepping into the dim light.
"Yes," I stammered, keeping my head down. "His heart stopped two minutes ago."
Chloe didn't gasp. She didn't cry. The woman Dominic had planned to marry simply smiled, walking over to the bed and staring down at his pale face with absolute, toxic delight.
Vincent reached out and pressed two fingers hard against Dominic’s neck, checking the carotid artery.
