Chapter 8 - The Funeral Celebration

Three days later, Vincent and Chloe hosted a massive, lavish gala at the city's most exclusive luxury hotel.
It was publicly disguised as a "memorial" for the tragically deceased Dominic Rossi, whose body was supposedly lost in a cartel fire. But in reality, it was a coronation. Two hundred of the city’s most elite, wealthy criminals and corrupt politicians filled the grand ballroom, drinking expensive champagne and laughing.
Chloe stood in the center of the room, wearing a stunning, backless black silk dress and wearing the massive diamond necklace Dominic had bought for her. She played the grieving widow flawlessly for the cameras, then turned around and smiled wickedly at Vincent.
Vincent walked up to the microphone on the grand stage, wearing Dominic’s custom gold watch.
"My brother was a great man," Vincent lied smoothly, his voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers. "But the city needs strong leadership in his absence. Tonight, I officially assume control of the Rossi syndicate."
The room erupted into applause. Vincent raised his champagne glass, soaking in the absolute, toxic glory of his stolen empire.
He thought he was untouchable. He thought the nurse was dead, the sister was gone, and his brother was ash.
But suddenly, the heavy mahogany double doors at the back of the ballroom slammed shut with a deafening, violent crash.
