Chapter 10 - The Vow in the Rain

Dante didn't loom over her. The towering, feared mafia boss took off his heavy, dry suit jacket and gently draped it over Cara’s trembling, freezing shoulders.
He looked at the fierce, brave woman who had sacrificed everything to bring him the truth.
"Your brother was an innocent man," Dante said softly, his dark eyes filled with profound, overwhelming respect and deep remorse. "I cannot bring him back. But I swear on my life, his name will be honored, and the men who pulled the trigger will not survive the night."
Cara looked up at him, tears of grief and absolute relief finally spilling down her mud-stained cheeks. The agonizing weight of her brother's murder had finally been avenged.
"You are never putting on a waitress uniform again, Cara," Dante vowed, the absolute power of his massive wealth backing every single syllable. "You are under the permanent, untouchable protection of my syndicate. Whatever you need, whatever you want to build, it is yours."
Cara clutched his jacket around her shoulders, feeling entirely, wonderfully safe for the first time in her life.
Dante gently offered her his hand. She took it, and he led her away from the dark abyss of the cliff, guiding her into the warmth of the remaining armored SUV.

A month later, the violent branches of the syndicate were completely purged. Elena and Marcus were permanently erased by the rival cartel, leaving Dante to rule his empire with absolute, unchallenged authority. Cara’s brother received a beautiful, honorable memorial, and Cara stepped out of the shadows, no longer a struggling waitress, but the most fiercely protected and respected woman in the city.
If you were Cara, would you have accepted the mafia boss's protection, or would you have demanded millions to walk away and start a new life alone?
