Chapter 4 - The Dead Man's Voicemail

Cara collapsed on the wet asphalt, the freezing rain soaking into her torn red gown. She sobbed in pure, agonizing defeat. Her brother was dead, and the man who could have destroyed his murderers was about to drive to his own execution.

Suddenly, her cheap cell phone buzzed in her pocket.

It was a voicemail. From Tommy.

With trembling, bloodstained fingers, Cara pressed the phone to her ear.

"Cara... " Tommy’s voice was wet, ragged, and fading fast. "They shot me. Marcus's men. They made me cut the brake lines on the boss's armored car. I didn't know whose it was until it was too late. I'm sorry, Cara. Tell... tell the boss. Marcus and Elena are taking the empire. I love you..."

The audio cut to dead, horrifying silence.

The cinematic realism of Cara’s profound, volcanic grief was suffocating. The tears stopped. The terror completely evaporated. A cold, absolute, and demonic rage hijacked her entire nervous system.

She stood up, ignoring the freezing rain and the torn fabric of her dress.

She ran to the alley entrance just in time to see Dante’s massive, heavy armored black car pull out of the VIP garage, speeding toward the mountain highway.

Cara didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy metal pipe from the dumpster, violently smashed the window of a catering delivery motorcycle, hot-wired the ignition, and tore out into the violent storm.
