Chapter 1 - The Screaming Infant

The luxury first-class airplane cabin was suffocatingly tense. The bright natural light streaming through the airplane windows reflected off the glossy mahogany wood tables and cream leather seats, but the atmosphere was anything but peaceful.

A baby was screaming uncontrollably.

Vincent Moretti, a feared mafia boss in his late thirties, sat in the center aisle. He was exhausted, his face carved with heavy lines of stress and lack of sleep. He wore an unbuttoned black shirt under a tailored black suit jacket, a heavy silver watch glinting on his wrist. He was bouncing his infant son, who was wrapped in a light blue and white patterned blanket, desperately trying to calm him.

His massive guards, men in dark black suits and ties, stood tense and alert in the background, helpless against the crying child.

Suddenly, a tiny figure stepped past the menacing wall of muscle.

It was Leah. A ten-year-old girl with long brown hair tied back with a light blue bow. She wore a dark navy blue coat with shiny gold buttons. She was an orphan Vincent was transporting as a favor to a fallen friend, and she was unusually brave.

Leah stopped right in front of the exhausted, dangerous billionaire.

"He isn't hungry," Leah said, her young voice firm and incredibly confident. "Something is frightening him."

Vincent stared at the bold little girl in pure surprise. He looked down at his crying son, completely at a loss.

"What?" Vincent asked, his voice tired and tense.

Without asking for permission, Leah reached out. She carefully lifted the edge of the baby's light blue patterned blanket.
