Chapter 2 - The Green Eyes
The cinematic realism of the terrifying, impossible moment gripped the bright city plaza.
The wealthy pedestrians blurred into the background as Brett’s entire universe narrowed down to the two shivering girls. A medium shot captured Brett staring at the filthy children. His chest heaved with heavy, panicked breaths. He wasn't just looking at his daughter's identical face. He was staring directly into a pair of stunning, incredibly specific emerald-green eyes.
They were the exact same green eyes of his deceased wife, Sarah.
"Where is your mom?" Brett choked out, his deep voice trembling with a profound, agonizing mixture of hope and absolute terror.
A close-up captured Vera, the older homeless twin wearing the dirty tan dress. She snatched the wrapped sandwich from Valerie’s hands with desperate hunger. But she didn't smile. She immediately stepped forward, positioning her small, dirty body fiercely and protectively in front of her sister. She looked at the towering man in the navy suit with heavy, guarded suspicion.
"We don't have a mom," Vera answered, her tiny voice trembling, yet radiating a fierce, tragic independence that broke Brett’s heart into a million pieces.
To understand the sheer, unhinged impossibility of this moment, one had to know Brett's devastating past. Five years ago, his pregnant wife, Sarah, had gone into premature labor while visiting her wealthy, highly manipulative mother, Marnie, in another state.
Marnie had called Brett from the hospital, weeping hysterically, claiming Sarah had died in childbirth, and that the twin girls she was carrying hadn't survived the emergency surgery. Brett had buried three empty, closed caskets, entirely destroyed by grief.
He only had Valerie, their oldest daughter, who had stayed home with him.
