Chapter 3 - The Birthmark

The heavy, suffocating silence of the plaza was broken by Valerie's sweet, innocent giggle.
A medium close-up captured the wealthy five-year-old girl stepping closer to the two dirty, terrified twins. Valerie didn't see the dirt or the torn dresses. She just saw two girls who looked exactly like her.
"Look!" Valerie smiled brightly. She reached up with her tiny hand and brushed her long, curly blonde hair aside, intentionally exposing the skin right behind her right ear.
Resting perfectly on her pale skin was a tiny, highly distinct, star-shaped birthmark.
The two homeless girls gasped in sheer, unfiltered surprise. In perfect unison, Vera and Violet instinctively reached up with their dirty hands, touching the exact same spots on their own necks.
"Why do they have my face, Daddy?" Valerie asked innocently, looking back at her paralyzed father.
Brett stopped breathing. The air in the sunlit plaza instantly dropped ten degrees.
The star-shaped birthmark was a genetic trait passed down directly from his late wife. It wasn't a coincidence. It was absolute, undeniable biological proof. The two barefoot, starving girls standing in front of him weren't random street children. They were his biological daughters.
But if they were his daughters, that meant his mother-in-law, Marnie, hadn't just lied about the tragic hospital deaths. She had actively, meticulously faked their deaths, stolen his newborn twins, and somehow lost them to the streets.
