Chapter 4 - The Dented Locket

A tight close-up captured Violet, the younger homeless twin in the dirty pink dress.
She stepped shyly out from behind her protective sister. She looked at Brett, sensing the profound, desperate emotion radiating from the massive man in the expensive suit. With a small, trembling hand, Violet reached under the collar of her torn dress.
She slowly pulled out a heavy, dented gold locket attached to a frayed string.
Brett’s jaw literally unhinged. He physically staggered backward, his knee scraping painfully against the hard cobblestone.
He instantly recognized the locket. It was the custom-made, solid gold necklace he had given his wife on their first wedding anniversary. It was the exact same locket his mother-in-law claimed was buried inside Sarah's closed casket.
"Aunt Marnie said this was our mom's," Violet whispered softly, clutching the dented gold tightly against her small chest.
A medium shot captured Brett’s face as his wealthy, composed, and untouchable exterior completely, violently shattered.
The missing puzzle pieces violently slammed together. Marnie hadn't just faked the deaths of the twins. She had faked the death of his wife, Sarah. Marnie had always hated Brett, believing he wasn't "old money" enough for her elite family. She had used the premature labor to kidnap her own daughter and grandchildren, hiding them away to completely erase Brett from their lives.
But why were the girls homeless? Where was Sarah?
