Chapter 5 - The Wrath Awakens
An extreme close-up captured Brett’s face.
He stared at the gold locket resting in his starving daughter's dirty hand. His dark eyes rapidly filled with a terrifying, apocalyptic mix of profound, agonizing grief and dangerous, absolute rage. The gentle, heartbroken father was completely dead, violently replaced by a ruthless, calculating apex predator.
"They lied to me..." Brett whispered in horror, his deep voice shaking with lethal promise.
He didn't scream. He didn't scare the girls. He slowly stood up from the cobblestone, towering over the plaza in his navy blue suit. He gently reached out, carefully scooping both Vera and Violet into his strong, protective arms, entirely ignoring the street dirt staining his expensive clothing.
"You are never going to be hungry again," Brett promised fiercely, pressing the two terrified girls against his chest. "I am your dad. And I am taking you home."
Within ten minutes, Brett’s massive, heavily armored black SUV pulled up to the plaza. He securely buckled Valerie and her newly found sisters into the plush leather seats.
But Brett didn't drive them back to his massive corporate headquarters. He drove directly to his private estate, handing the girls over to his most trusted, heavily armed security team and a private pediatric doctor.
Then, Brett pulled his encrypted cell phone from his tailored suit.
He didn't call the police. The police were too slow, and Marnie had enough money to bribe her way out of a standard kidnapping charge. Brett called his ruthless corporate lawyers and his private intelligence firm.

"I want every single financial account, property deed, and offshore trust attached to Marnie Sterling completely frozen," Brett commanded coldly. "And I want her location. Now."
