Chapter 3 - The Impossible Accusation

"He's three years old, Agnes!" Vivian shrieked wildly, violently thrashing her arm toward the house. "He can barely walk! The chemotherapy makes him so weak he hasn't been able to climb the stairs in three weeks! How exactly did he sneak into your private study on the third floor?!"

Agnes’s arrogant smirk violently vanished. A brief, micro-expression of pure, unadulterated panic flashed across her flawless powdered face.

But she immediately doubled down, aggressively crossing her arms over her green velvet coat.

"Are you calling me a liar in my own house?!" Agnes hissed venomously. "I found him sitting on my Persian rug holding the shattered pieces of my watch! He used that disgusting hairpiece you made him to try and hide the glass! I threw it in the snow where it belongs, right next to him!"

To understand the absolute, unhinged cruelty of the wealthy mother-in-law, one had to look at the last six months of Vivian's marriage. Vivian's husband, Greg, was Agnes's only son. When Toby was diagnosed with severe leukemia, the medical bills instantly bankrupted Vivian and Greg. They were forcefully evicted from their apartment and had to beg Agnes to let them move into her sprawling suburban estate just to survive.

Agnes didn't offer sympathy. She completely hated Vivian for being poor, and she actively viewed her sick grandson as a pathetic, massive financial burden on her high-society lifestyle.

"Where is Greg?!" Vivian panicked loudly, frantically looking toward the massive iron gates of the estate.

"My son went to the bank," Agnes sneered aggressively. "To withdraw the ten thousand dollars you owe me for destroying my watch."

👉 Vivian’s blood ran ice-cold as she realized Agnes had actively waited for Greg to leave before violently attacking Toby.
