Chapter 1 - The Child in the Wolf’s Den

The modern luxury office was a fortress of dark wood-paneled walls, heavy leather furniture, and warm, suffocatingly tense lighting. Behind the massive, dark mahogany desk sat Lorenzo.

He was a heavily muscular man in his late thirties, wearing a tailored all-black suit and a crisp black shirt. Dark, intricate tattoos crawled up his neck and covered the backs of his hands. He was a man who commanded a criminal empire, and his office was strictly off-limits to everyone.

Except for the tiny intruder currently standing in front of his desk.

Sofia, a four-year-old girl with brown hair pinned back by a bright pink clip, wore a pastel ruffled dress. She clutched a worn brown teddy bear to her chest. She wasn't crying. She wasn't terrified. Instead, she looked up at the towering, heavily tattooed mafia boss and scrunched her face up, making a cute, exaggerated angry expression.

"You make this face," Sofia stated innocently.

Lorenzo’s jaw locked. He had no idea how a child had bypassed his armed security. He violently slammed his tattooed hands flat onto the dark desk, leaning forward with an intensely angry, lethal glare.

"You look angry," Sofia added, completely unfazed by the terrifying man.

Suddenly, the heavy office doors burst open. Clara, a woman in her thirties wearing a grey maid uniform with a white collar and apron, rushed into the room. She was holding a heavy silver tray, her eyes wide with absolute, paralyzing panic.

"Sofia, come here!" Clara gasped, her voice cracking with terror as the silver tray rattled in her shaking hands.

Lorenzo stood up to his full, intimidating height. He pointed a commanding, tattooed finger directly at the maid.

"Stay right there," Lorenzo ordered, his voice a dark, echoing rumble.

He slowly walked around the desk. He crouched down until his face was inches away from the little girl, his dark eyes analyzing her.

"Aren't you afraid of me?" Lorenzo asked softly.

Sofia hugged her brown teddy bear tightly. She smiled up at him with pure, unfiltered innocence. "No."

Lorenzo’s intense, lethal expression completely faltered, softening into genuine, profound confusion. "Why?"

Sofia slowly reached out her small, chubby hand. She gently touched Lorenzo's forehead, right between his furrowed eyebrows. The ruthless boss didn't pull away. A subtle, incredibly warm smile touched his lips.
