Chapter 2 - The Stolen Breath

The silence in the grand, wood-paneled office was deafening.
Lorenzo slowly turned his head to look at Clara. The young maid was practically hyperventilating by the doorway, the silver tray slipping from her sweaty fingers and crashing loudly onto the hardwood floor.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Lorenzo!" Clara sobbed, dropping to her knees to gather the spilled coffee cups. "I'll pack my things immediately! Please don't hurt her! She just wandered out of the servant's quarters while I was preparing your tray!"
Lorenzo stood up, his towering, muscular frame casting a long shadow over the room. The ruthless mafia boss who routinely destroyed entire organizations didn't call his security. He didn't scream.
He looked back at Sofia, who was still smiling up at him, entirely untouched by the darkness of his world.
"Why is your daughter living in my house, Clara?" Lorenzo asked, his voice dropping the commanding edge, replacing it with a quiet, dangerous curiosity. "My staff is strictly forbidden from bringing family onto the estate. You know the rules."
Clara squeezed her eyes shut. Tears poured down her pale cheeks. She had worked for Lorenzo for three months, keeping her head down, remaining entirely invisible. But her secret was finally out.
"If I leave her at a daycare, he will find her," Clara wept, her voice trembling violently. "He will take her away from me, and I will never see her again."
Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed. He recognized the look on Clara's face. It wasn't just fear of losing her job. It was the absolute, raw terror of a hunted animal.
"Who is he?" Lorenzo demanded smoothly.
