Chapter 4 - The Monster at the Gates

The red security lights began flashing through the large office windows.
Lorenzo’s head of security, a massive man named Marco, burst into the room.
"Boss," Marco said, his voice tense. "We have a massive problem at the main gate. State Senator Richard Vance is outside. He brought six armed police cruisers. They are threatening to ram the gates if we don't open them."
Clara let out a blood-curdling scream of pure panic. She lunged forward, grabbing Sofia and pulling the little girl desperately into her chest.
"No! No, please!" Clara begged hysterically, falling to her knees and looking up at Lorenzo. "He found us! He tracked my phone! Please, Mr. Lorenzo, don't let him take her! He'll kill me!"
Lorenzo looked down at the sobbing mother and the terrified little girl clutching her brown teddy bear.
In his world, bringing a swarm of cops to his front door was an act of war. The logical, ruthless mafia boss would hand the maid over to avoid a federal investigation. It was the smart play.
But Lorenzo looked at the little girl who had touched his face without an ounce of fear. He looked at the bruises on Clara's neck.
Lorenzo slowly buttoned his black suit jacket. His dark eyes turned entirely merciless.
"Marco," Lorenzo ordered, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that radiated pure cinematic realism. "Open the gates. Let the Senator into the main foyer. But disarm the cops at the door. Nobody walks into my house with a weapon."
"Yes, Boss," Marco nodded, immediately running out.
Clara sobbed uncontrollably. "You're giving us back to him..."

"Clara," Lorenzo said, crouching down and lifting her chin with a gentle, tattooed finger. "I am the devil they whisper about in this city. And today, the devil is on your side. Stand behind me."
