Chapter 3 - The Scars of the Past

Lorenzo slowly walked over to the terrified maid. He didn't yell. He extended his large, tattooed hand and gently helped Clara up from the floor.
"Tell me," Lorenzo commanded softly.
Clara took a shuddering breath, looking at Sofia, who was busy fixing her teddy bear's tiny bowtie.
"His name is Richard Vance," Clara whispered, her voice choking on the name.
Lorenzo’s facial micro-expressions shifted. He knew that name. Richard Vance was a highly connected, wealthy state senator. A man who presented himself to the public as a champion of family values and morality.
"He is a monster," Clara cried softly. "Behind closed doors, he beat me until I couldn't stand. When I finally found the courage to file for divorce, he used his political connections to freeze my bank accounts. He framed me for stealing from his campaign fund."
Lorenzo’s jaw tightened. "And the police?"
"They work for him," Clara laughed bitterly, a tear slipping down her cheek. "He told the judge I was an unfit, drug-addicted mother. He got full custody. Two nights ago, he came into Sofia's room drunk. He raised his hand to her. I couldn't let him hurt my baby."
Clara subconsciously reached up, pulling the high white collar of her grey maid uniform down just a fraction of an inch.
Lorenzo’s blood turned to absolute ice.
Fading into Clara’s neck were deep, dark purple bruises shaped exactly like a man's fingers. Someone had tried to choke the life out of her.
"I grabbed Sofia and ran in the middle of the night," Clara sobbed. "I begged the head housekeeper here to hide us. I just needed to save enough money to disappear."
Lorenzo stared at the bruises. The little girl's words echoed in his mind: Mommy makes this angry face too. It wasn't anger. It was the face of a woman living in constant, agonizing stress.
