Chapter 9 - The Safe Haven

Within twenty minutes, a fleet of black FBI SUVs swarmed the estate. Richard Vance was dragged out of the mansion in handcuffs, screaming and crying as the federal agents tossed him into the back of a vehicle. The corrupt local cops were stripped of their badges on the spot.

The chaotic flashing lights faded into the distance, leaving the grand foyer perfectly quiet once again.

Lorenzo stood in the center of the room. He picked up the torn brown teddy bear from the floor. With surprising gentleness, the heavily tattooed mafia boss tucked the loose stuffing back inside the toy.

He walked up the stairs and handed the bear back to little Sofia.

"There you go, little one," Lorenzo smiled warmly.

Sofia grabbed the bear and immediately threw her small arms around Lorenzo's massive leg, hugging him tightly. "Thank you, angry man."

Lorenzo chuckled, a rich, deep sound that had never been heard in the dark mansion.

He looked up at Clara. The young mother was weeping silently, her hands covering her mouth as the crushing, agonizing weight of her past was finally lifted from her shoulders. She was free.

"I'll pack our things, Mr. Lorenzo," Clara whispered, wiping her tears. "Thank you for saving us. We will leave tonight."

"Leave?" Lorenzo asked, his dark eyebrows raising in genuine confusion.

Clara nodded nervously. "I can't work here anymore. I brought police to your door. I caused so much trouble."

Lorenzo reached out and gently placed his hand on Clara's shoulder.

"You aren't a maid anymore, Clara," Lorenzo said softly, his blue-gray eyes filled with immense respect. "And you certainly aren't leaving."
