Chapter 10 - The Family Built in the Dark

Clara looked up, utterly bewildered. "Sir?"
"You are the bravest woman I have ever met," Lorenzo said, his voice carrying the absolute truth. "You protected your daughter against a monster, and you trusted me when you had every reason to run. The trust fund will be unfrozen soon. Until then, you and Sofia have a permanent, safe home in this estate. Not as staff. As my guests."
Clara gasped, fresh tears of pure joy spilling down her cheeks. "Mr. Lorenzo... I don't know what to say."
"Just say you'll stay," Lorenzo smiled softly.
Over the next few months, the massive, lonely mansion was completely transformed. The dark, echoing hallways were filled with the sound of a little girl's laughter. Clara flourished, stepping out of the shadows and using her father's trust fund to start a massive charity for victims of domestic abuse.
Richard Vance was convicted on federal charges of embezzlement, corruption, and domestic battery. Stripped of his wealth and power, he was sentenced to forty years in a maximum-security prison, left to rot exactly where he belonged.
Lorenzo’s ruthless empire continued to run perfectly, but the terrifying boss fundamentally changed. He stopped working late. He came home early every single night just to have dinner with Clara and read Sofia a bedtime story.
One evening, Lorenzo sat at his dark mahogany desk, looking over contracts. Sofia ran into the room, holding her stitched-up teddy bear, and climbed effortlessly onto his lap. Clara walked in right behind her, carrying two cups of coffee, smiling warmly at the man she had fallen deeply in love with.

Lorenzo looked at the beautiful woman and the little girl who had melted his frozen heart. He finally realized that true power wasn't about the fear you strike into your enemies, but the absolute safety you provide for the people you love.
Do you think Lorenzo was right to hand the evidence over to the FBI, or should he have taken care of Richard his own way?
