Chapter 1 - The Executive Hallway

The modern executive hallway of Moretti Holdings in Chicago was a pristine fortress of glass office walls, polished stone floors, and massive windows overlooking the city skyline. It was an intimidating place, radiating absolute wealth and corporate power.
Emma, a brilliant data analyst in her late twenties, limped painfully down the corridor. She wore a wrinkled white blouse, a fitted black pencil skirt, and a delicate necklace. Her dark brown hair was pulled back into a loose, messy low bun. She clutched a black portfolio tightly against her chest, favoring her left leg with every agonizing step she took.
She took one severely uneven step and was forced to stop beside the glass wall, holding her arm tightly across her bruised ribs.
Adrian, the CEO of the massive firm, was standing nearby. He was in his late thirties, tall, heavily muscular, and devastatingly handsome, with swept-back dark hair and light stubble. Wearing a tailored charcoal suit, a crisp black shirt, and a luxury wristwatch, he radiated a calm, chilling authority. Two massive security men in black suits stood completely silent several feet behind him.
Adrian slowly turned toward her. His piercing gaze scanned her disheveled appearance, locking onto the faint, dark purple bruise blooming on her pale cheek.
"You're injured," Adrian stated. His deep voice wasn't a question; it was a clinical, inescapable observation.
Emma tightened her grip on the black portfolio, her natural micro-expressions shifting into deep, guarded panic. She desperately avoided looking into his dark, observant eyes.
"I slipped on the stairs," Emma lied softly, her voice trembling just slightly.
Adrian took a slow step closer. He didn't believe a single word. His gaze briefly moved toward her bruised cheek before returning directly to her terrified eyes.
"You're afraid," Adrian corrected her smoothly, his tone incredibly restrained but carrying a terrifying weight.
Emma carefully straightened her posture, fighting through the physical pain in her ribs to maintain a sliver of professional distance between them.
"My personal life isn't your business, Mr. Moretti," Emma replied, desperately trying to protect her shameful secret.
Suddenly, one of the heavily muscular security men approached Adrian, stopping respectfully at his shoulder. Emma watched anxiously, her heart hammering against her ribs.
"Boss," the security man said in a low, serious voice. "We found him."
Emma’s breath completely hitched. Her terrified eyes shifted wildly from the guard back to Adrian’s cold, unreadable face as the horrifying realization set in.
