Chapter 2 - The Parasite at Home

To understand the sheer, paralyzing terror in Emma’s eyes, one had to look at the violent nightmare she lived in every single day.
Emma wasn't just clumsy. For the past three years, she had been trapped in a highly toxic, physically abusive marriage to a man named Greg. Greg was a chronically unemployed, deeply arrogant narcissist with a severe underground gambling addiction. He treated Emma like a disposable human ATM, constantly draining her hard-earned corporate salary to fund his pathetic, destructive lifestyle.
The previous night had been the absolute breaking point.
Greg had completely maxed out his credit. Desperate and cornered by his dangerous bookies, he demanded that Emma sign over the deed to her late grandmother’s house—her only remaining sanctuary. When Emma finally found the courage to refuse him, Greg’s arrogant entitlement morphed into blinding, brutal violence.
He had grabbed her by the hair, throwing her violently against the wooden staircase. He kicked her ribs when she was down, leaving her bruised, shattered, and weeping on the floor.
"You are nothing!" Greg had screamed at her, mocking her tears. "You're a pathetic, weak little clerk! You're going to sign those papers tomorrow, or I will come down to that boring, sterile corporate office of yours and beat you in front of your entire department!"
Emma had barely survived the night. She had dragged herself to work this morning, desperate to finalize a major corporate merger for Moretti Holdings, foolishly believing that the polished glass walls of her office would provide some sort of temporary safety.
