Chapter 5 - The Glass Cage

The heavy glass door slammed shut behind Greg, sealing them inside the private office.
Emma jumped out of her ergonomic chair, her heart hammering violently against her bruised ribs. She clutched her black portfolio to her chest, backing away until her hips hit the edge of her desk.
"I told you I wasn't playing games, Emma," Greg sneered, throwing the manila folder aggressively onto her keyboard. "Sign the damn deed. My guys are getting impatient, and if I don't have the money by tonight, they're going to break my legs."
"Greg, please, you can't be here," Emma pleaded, her voice trembling in hushed panic as she glanced nervously through the glass walls. "This is a professional environment! I will lose my job!"
Greg let out a cruel, mocking laugh. He took a threatening step forward, completely invading her personal space.
"I don't give a damn about your stupid, boring corporate job!" Greg shouted, pointing a furious finger in her face. "You think these weak men in suits are going to protect you? You think this HR department cares about you? You are my wife! You do what I say!"
He raised his right hand, pulling his arm back to deliver a brutal, open-handed slap across her face right in the middle of her workplace.
Emma squeezed her eyes shut, instinctively raising her arms to shield her bruised cheek from the incoming blow.
