Chapter 1 - The Ignored Calls

The modern American neonatal intensive care unit was a cinematic, highly sterile environment of bright fluorescent lights and the rhythmic, terrifying beeping of medical monitors. Through the massive, rain-streaked windows, the dark city skyline glowed faintly against the stormy night.
Inside the quiet room, a devastating scene of sheer, agonizing heartbreak was unfolding.
Audrey, a beautiful woman in her late twenties, sat heavily in a hospital wheelchair. She was wearing a standard white hospital gown, her short blonde hair a messy, sweaty halo around her pale face. She was completely exhausted, physically broken from an emergency, high-risk delivery that had almost killed her just hours ago.
She sat right beside a clear plastic incubator. Inside, her premature newborn son, Caleb, was fighting for his fragile life, hooked up to an intricate array of tiny breathing tubes.
But Audrey wasn't looking at her son.
She was pointing a shaking, accusing finger directly at Graham.
Graham was her husband, known in the city as "The Port King"—a fiercely handsome, thirty-something billionaire who controlled the entire shipping district. He stood stiffly by the incubator, wearing an expensive charcoal overcoat over an unbuttoned white shirt.
He didn't look worried. He looked annoyed.
