Chapter 3 - The Broken Illusion

Graham’s jaw clenched so hard it looked like it would shatter.
For a fraction of a second, the untouchable Port King panicked. He quickly, violently pulled his charcoal overcoat tightly closed over his chest, desperately trying to hide the pale streak of makeup on his collar.
He didn't apologize. He didn't explain. He fed on the power of dominating the people around him, and he absolutely hated being cornered by his own wife.
"This isn't the place, Audrey," Graham warned, his voice a low, dangerous rumble meant to terrorize her into submission. "Keep your voice down. You are acting completely hysterical right now."
Audrey didn't flinch. She didn't scream or throw a tantrum. The cinematic realism of her total, icy restraint was infinitely more terrifying than a shouting match.
She slowly turned her head, looking through the clear plastic wall of the incubator at her tiny, struggling son. She thought about the sheer terror of waking up in a pool of blood alone in their massive penthouse. She thought about screaming his name in the ambulance while he was miles away, ruining another woman’s makeup.
The illusion of her perfect, high-society marriage was completely, irreversibly shattered.
She refused to back down to the man who terrified everyone else in the city.

"My son couldn't breathe," Audrey whispered fiercely, keeping her eyes on the baby.
