Chapter 8 - The Financial Checkmate

The federal agents dragged the weeping, hysterical man through the wet shipping yard, throwing him directly into the back of an armored transport vehicle. His desperate, pathetic cries faded into the pouring rain, ending his reign of psychological cruelty, greed, and arrogance forever. He was going to federal prison entirely broke.

Back in the bright, quiet NICU, Audrey hung up the satellite phone.

She slipped it back into her pocket, the heavy, agonizing weight of an abusive, toxic marriage finally, permanently lifted from her shoulders.

The heavy doors of the NICU opened softly.

Arthur, a sharp, impeccably dressed corporate attorney in his sixties, walked into the room. He wasn't Graham’s lawyer. He was Audrey’s private counsel.

Arthur handed Audrey a thick, leather-bound folder.

"The asset transfer is complete, Mrs. Vance," Arthur stated flawlessly. "Since Graham used marital funds to purchase the illegal shipments, we successfully triggered the emergency corporate forfeiture clause. You are now the sole, undisputed majority shareholder of the entire logistics empire."

Audrey didn't even look at the multi-million-dollar paperwork.

"Liquidate his personal accounts," Audrey commanded quietly. "Set up a blind trust for Caleb's medical care, and donate the rest to the women's shelter downtown. Leave Graham with absolutely nothing."

"Consider it done," Arthur bowed respectfully, stepping out of the room.
