Chapter 9 - The First Breath

Audrey was left completely alone with her son.

She was incredibly wealthy, entirely secure, and permanently free from the monster who had terrorized her. But none of the money mattered compared to the tiny life fighting inside the plastic box.

She slowly pushed her wheelchair closer to the incubator.

She reached through the small, circular access ports, her trembling fingers gently brushing against Caleb’s tiny, fragile hand.

Suddenly, the rhythmic, terrifying beeping of the medical monitors shifted into a steady, strong, and beautiful pulse. The respiratory machines quieted down.

Caleb’s tiny chest rose and fell on its own. He let out a soft, healthy cry, his small fingers instinctively wrapping tightly around Audrey’s finger.

Audrey burst into genuine tears of absolute, overwhelming joy. The cold, ruthless mastermind completely vanished, replaced entirely by a profoundly grateful, fiercely loving mother. She leaned her forehead against the clear plastic of the incubator, weeping with pure relief.

Her son was going to survive. They were both going to survive.

In the months that followed, Graham was sentenced to twenty years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, completely stripped of his wealth and abandoned by high society. Audrey completely overhauled the logistics empire, firing every corrupt executive and transforming the company into a legitimate powerhouse.
