Chapter 3 - The Midnight Discovery

To understand the sheer, catastrophic panic currently exploding inside the billionaire’s chest, one had to understand exactly what had happened forty-eight hours earlier in the dark silence of their sprawling penthouse.
It was 2:00 AM. Claire had been awake, pacing the hardwood floors, desperately trying to soothe their crying one-month-old daughter. She was exhausted, her body still recovering from a traumatic childbirth, functioning on barely two hours of sleep.
Vincent had been fast asleep in the master bedroom, completely ignoring his crying child.
Claire had walked past Vincent’s home office to grab a pacifier when his private, highly encrypted corporate tablet suddenly lit up on the mahogany desk. A bright notification flashed across the dark screen. It was an urgent text message from a luxury real estate broker in Beverly Hills.
“Congratulations, Mr. Moretti. The $6.5 million transfer has officially cleared. The keys to the Bel Air estate will be delivered to Ms. Sophia tomorrow morning. She is going to love it.”
Claire had stopped breathing. The cinematic realism of the absolute, crushing betrayal hit her with the physical force of a freight train.
She stood in the dark, clutching her newborn baby to her chest, her heart shattering into a million jagged pieces. Her husband wasn't just having an affair with his personal assistant while she was pregnant. He was buying her a massive, multi-million-dollar hidden estate while Claire was suffering through postpartum depression entirely alone.
Most women would have screamed. Most women would have woken their husbands up and thrown the tablet at the wall in a fit of hysterical, agonizing grief.
