Chapter 1 - The Bistro Blackmail

The upscale American bistro in the heart of the city was a cinematic display of quiet luxury. Warm ambient lighting reflected softly off the pristine white tablecloths, glowing around the flickering candles and crystal wine glasses. In the background, wealthy patrons blurred together in hushed, elegant conversation.

But at a private corner table, a devastating scene of pure, unadulterated psychological cruelty was unfolding.

Patricia, a fifty-eight-year-old widow wearing a beautiful light blue textured jacket and a pearl necklace, was sitting completely frozen. She was cornered in the velvet booth, her face pale with profound, agonizing shock.

Sitting directly across from her was her thirty-something daughter, Samantha. Samantha wore a plunging red evening dress, her long wavy red hair cascading perfectly down her shoulders. Next to Samantha sat her fiancé, Brandon, a handsome man in his thirties wearing a dark suit with an open white shirt.

They weren't having a pleasant family dinner.

Samantha and Brandon simultaneously, aggressively pushed a thick stack of stapled legal documents directly across the white tablecloth, sliding them right in front of Patricia.

"Sign it, Mom," Samantha demanded, her voice dropping into an aggressive, lethal whisper that cut right through the ambient music. "Otherwise, you'll never see Mason again."

Patricia stopped breathing. The air in her lungs violently turned to absolute ice. Mason was Patricia’s beloved five-year-old grandson—Samantha’s only child.
