Chapter 2 - The Mother's Betrayal

To understand why a sister was gutting a luxury apartment, one had to look at the incredibly toxic dynamic of the family.
For the past five years, Rachel had worked eighty-hour weeks building a highly successful digital marketing agency. She had paid for the lease on this massive skyline apartment, and she had spent over sixty thousand dollars personally designing and furnishing the entire space.
But their mother, Diane, had always aggressively favored Kayla.
Kayla refused to work, claiming she was waiting for her "influencer career" to take off. Diane constantly enabled her, demanding that Rachel financially support her younger sister.
Two days ago, Rachel had finally hit a breaking point and refused to pay off Kayla’s massive fifteen-thousand-dollar credit card debt.
In retaliation, Diane secretly went behind Rachel’s back. Because Diane’s name was technically listed as a co-signer on the original apartment lease from years ago, she contacted the building management. Diane legally transferred the primary lease entirely to Kayla, effectively kicking Rachel out of her own home to give the "golden child" a free, luxurious place to film her internet videos.
"You have forty-eight hours to pack your clothes and leave," Diane had texted Rachel smugly the night before. "Your sister needs the space for her career. Leave the furniture, it fits her aesthetic perfectly."
Diane and Kayla thought Rachel would just cry, pack a single suitcase, and retreat to a cheap motel.
