Chapter 7 - The Utility Blackout

"No!" Kayla wailed hysterically, dropping the blue folder onto the bare hardwood floor. "Mom, you said this was going to be free! I don't have thirty-six thousand dollars! I don't even have a job!"
"We'll fight this in court!" Diane shrieked, desperately trying to maintain control. "I will hire my own lawyers! Rachel can't do this to her own family!"
"You can't afford me, let alone a defense attorney," Mr. Sterling scoffed in disgust.
He reached into his tailored suit jacket and pulled out a small electronic tablet.
"Oh, and one more thing," Mr. Sterling added calmly. "Since Rachel is no longer legally affiliated with this residence, she formally canceled all the utility accounts in her name this morning."

The central heating instantly shut off. The Wi-Fi routers died. The refrigerator in the kitchen powered down.
Kayla let out a horrific, high-pitched shriek of pure agony. She was standing in a freezing, pitch-black, completely empty apartment with a massive thirty-six-thousand-dollar debt hanging directly over her head.
"You have until 5:00 PM," Mr. Sterling reminded them coldly.

👉 Diane desperately dialed Rachel’s number, completely unaware that her eldest daughter was already celebrating her freedom.
