Chapter 4 - The Panicked Phone Call

The heavy front door clicked shut, leaving Kayla standing alone in the massive, terrifyingly empty apartment. The beautiful city skyline view suddenly looked cold and isolating.
Kayla scrambled to grab her phone, her manicured fingers trembling violently as she dialed their mother.
"Mom! She took everything!" Kayla wept hysterically the absolute second Diane answered the phone. "The apartment is completely empty! There isn't even a bed! You have to force her to bring it all back!"
"What?" Diane gasped over the speakerphone, her voice dripping with entitled rage. "That selfish brat! Don't worry, sweetie. I am driving over right now. I will call the police and report her for theft. We'll have her arrested!"
Thirty minutes later, Diane stormed into the empty apartment. She wore an expensive beige trench coat, looking around the bare hardwood floors with pure, unadulterated disgust.
"I cannot believe she actually did this," Diane sneered, wrapping her arm around a sobbing Kayla. "She is trying to ruin your life out of pure jealousy. But it doesn't matter. You have the lease now. We'll just order some new furniture on my credit card."
Suddenly, a loud, sharp knock echoed through the empty apartment.
Diane smiled triumphantly. "That must be the building manager. I called him to officially change the locks so Rachel can never step foot in here again."
