Chapter 8 - The Blocked Number

Diane stood in the freezing, dark apartment, her hands shaking violently as she dialed Rachel’s cell phone.
She expected it to ring. She expected Rachel to answer so she could scream, manipulate, and guilt-trip her eldest daughter into fixing the massive financial disaster.
“The number you have dialed is no longer in service.”
Diane physically staggered backward, dropping her phone. Rachel hadn't just moved out. She had completely, permanently severed every single line of communication.
Meanwhile, halfway across the city, Rachel was standing in a breathtaking, brand-new luxury condo she had secretly purchased three months ago.
The movers were carefully arranging her expensive leather sectional sofa in front of a massive fireplace. The new apartment was fully paid for, completely under her own name, and incredibly warm.
Rachel stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at the city skyline. She wore her cozy white loungewear, sipping a glass of expensive red wine.
She didn't feel an ounce of guilt. She felt incredibly, profoundly at peace.
