Chapter 1 - The Barefoot Woman in the Snow

The freezing winter wind howled through the dark streets of the city, driving heavy, biting snow onto the freezing pavement. Outside a beautiful, historic American church, warm golden light spilled from the heavy wooden doors, radiating a festive holiday atmosphere from the elite charity gala happening inside.

But on the cold stone steps outside, completely hidden in the shadows, a woman was dying.

Anna, a young woman with long, messy brown hair, was huddled against the freezing stone. She wore nothing but a thin, worn beige dress and a ragged grey blanket draped over her shivering shoulders. She was completely barefoot, her pale feet buried in the icy snow. She was vulnerable, starving, and freezing to death, but her face still held a quiet, unbroken dignity.

Suddenly, a tiny figure in a bright red wool coat with white trim and tiny white boots broke away from the pathway.

It was Emma, a three-year-old girl with blonde hair and a bright red bow. She marched with pure, innocent determination straight through the snow, heading directly toward the shivering woman on the steps.

"Emma, don't point," a tired, deep voice called out from off-screen.

It was Emma’s father, Arthur. A handsome man in his thirties, wearing a tailored black winter coat over a sharp suit and tie. He was an exhausted single dad, fiercely protective, just trying to get his daughter to their car.

But Emma stopped right in front of Anna. She looked down at the woman’s freezing, bare feet buried in the snow.
