Chapter 2 - The Heartbreaking Question

Anna pulled her freezing knees up to her chest, pulling the ragged grey blanket tighter around her shivering shoulders. She looked up at the little girl in the bright red coat, completely surprised. After days of being ignored by hundreds of wealthy people walking past her, this tiny child was the first person to actually see her as a human being.

"Emma, come here," Arthur called out, his heavy footsteps crunching in the snow as he walked toward the church steps.

Emma completely ignored her father. She stepped even closer to Anna, radiating a pure, childish compassion that pierced straight through the freezing night.

"Hi. I'm Emma," the little girl said brightly, offering a warm smile. "What's your name?"

Arthur walked up behind his daughter, fully intending to scoop her up and carry her to the car. But as he reached down, he finally stopped and really looked at the homeless woman sitting in the snow.

"Anna," the woman replied softly, her throat tight with emotion and cold.

Emma’s bright smile faded. She looked at Anna’s bare feet, then at the thin beige dress. Emma’s little face crumpled with pure, undiluted grief as she asked a question that would shatter anyone's heart.

"Is your family coming?" Emma asked sadly.

A tight, extreme close-up captured Anna’s face. She shook her head slowly, heavy tears welling in her eyes and spilling over her frozen cheeks. A subtle, powerful emotional pause hung in the freezing air.
